Preparing for Your Next Water Adventure

Tanjung Benoa Water Sports Bali - Marine Adventure Single Activity ...

As the weather heats up, the time to get back on the water draws closer. Spending time outside on a river, lake, or the ocean is a wonderful way to get away from the hectic buzz of daily life. Water safety is essential for all aquatic adventures, so use these tips to stay safe while enjoying the great outdoors.

Prepping

Before you hit the waves, it’s crucial to make sure your watercraft of choice is safe and up-to-date on maintenance. Do a visual inspection for general damage such as scratches and cracks. Check the boat’s wiring to make sure it’s not frayed or chewed up by animals. Be sure to inspect your ladder, rails, and rudder, as well as your pumps, filters, battery, and fluid levels. Inspect and repair your trailer as well, paying attention to the wheel bearings, tires, and brake lights. If you find areas on your craft that require repair, find the appropriate replacement marine parts to fix the issues before setting sail.

Cleaning

A sparkling ship will bring you pride, that’s certain. Regularly cleaning your boat helps it look its best and helps you keep tabs on upcoming repairs. Start your cleaning process with general surfaces such as the hull and deck. Give your boat a thorough wash and add a coat of wax. A fresh coat of wax helps protect the paint and makes it look shiny and new. Inspect and replace wiper blades if needed, and clean windows and hatches. Inside, check all of your drains to make sure they aren’t blocked, and if you have wood finishes, clean them with wood oil. Make sure the sails and ropes are in good working order if your vessel uses sails. Cleaning your boat thoroughly can take time, but it helps protect the longevity of your ship.

Packing

Once your bateau is mechanically sound and thoroughly cleaned, it’s time to make sure you’re stocked for a day on the water. You’ll need the required safety equipment on board, such as fire extinguishers, a safety kit, and life jackets. Make sure your title and registration are up-to-date and stowed safely. You may opt to have a courtesy Vessel Safety Check done by the Coast Guard to make sure you’re complying with all requirements. Remember to pack personal items as well – plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and lip balm.

Routinely maintenance is a key part of boat ownership. By making sure your boat is safe to operate, you can enjoy the water without worrying about being caught unprepared for potential hazards.
