Homemade Cloth Mask: Good Or Bad Idea

To protect yourself from Covid-19, the main rule to follow is to respect confinement. The cotton masks (หน้ากาก ผ้า which is the term in Thai) made at home would be a false good idea, according to many experts. Only patients and health professionals in close contact with them need a surgical mask.

Coronavirus is not spread by air. It travels via microdroplets emitted by coughing, loud speech, or sneezing, capable of projecting up to a meter away. This is why, to protect your health and that of others, it is essential to stay at home, to respect safe distances when you are confronted with an audience, to wash your hands regularly, and to sneeze and cough in his elbow.

As recalled by the World Health Organization, wearing a mask is recommended only for patients and caregivers in close contact with patients. Among other things, there is a fitting procedure that the general public does not know and does not apply. However, many professionals work without protection because of a needlessly created shortage. From now on, masks in pharmacies can only be removed by carers with a professional card. Individuals will no longer have access to it.

Faced with this shortage, there remains an option for all designers and DIY enthusiasts: the homemade fabric mask.

Very Rare Efficacy

On social networks, groups of Internet users also offer patterns, masks made by them, or give tips for wrapping a scarf or scarf around his mouth and nose.

What about these solutions? The experts interviewed repeat it all day long: a simple tissue is not effective protection against the coronavirus. A mask must be changed every three or four hours, it must be washed daily under special conditions, must not be touched or moved, and meets specific manufacturing standards.
